Five Simple Ways to Downsize Your Home

The home you have enjoyed for years have slowly become to large to handle, and you’ve decided that a smaller place is a much better idea. The reasons why can be attributed to many things including a smaller family, or the desire to live comfortably. The valuable part, of course is to find the best way to downsize, to decide which things should stay or go. Here are some easy tips to help you get started.

First, start with the rooms that you don’t like, or don’t use very often. These places may be the guest bathroom, the attic, or even the spare bedroom on the third floor. Starting in these rooms accomplishes two basic feats. First it allows you to start the process without causing problems in more used portions of your home. Also, the things found in these rooms might be easier to get rid of, since they are not part of your daily life. They will not likely be missed in your new dream home.

Once the spare rooms are sorted out, tackle the furniture next. Often this is helped along by the fact that certain pieces of furniture simply will not fit in a smaller apartment or condo. A smaller apartment simply does not have the room for things like a six person dining room table, or a sleeper sofa. Taking care of the furniture can also give you a sense of getting something done.

Another tip for successful downsizing is to have a sorting system. It can be as simple as placing a red ribbon around things you want to keep to having a detailed list of everything and their destination. This tip is a fantastic way to be sure everyone knows what goes or stays.

Finally, make certain to allow enough time to get the job done. This is not something that you want to rush through, since there are a lot of memories and heirlooms. It’s better to start at least a month before you have to move than a week before. That should give you ample time to determine what stays, what goes, and make arrangements to deal with those items that you no longer need.

As soon as everything has been sorted out, your area churches or a charity would probably welcome the things that you don’t want. The different groups will often arrange for the objects to be removed very professionally. This allows the person to concentrate on starting their new life in their new dream home.
